Volunteer Mississippi

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency created to connect Americans of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to give back to their communities and their nation. CNCS - through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Volunteer Generation Fund - has helped to engage millions of citizens in meeting community and national challenges through service and volunteer action. The mission of Volunteer Mississippi is to engage and support Mississippians of all ages and backgrounds in service to their communities. Administering and supporting AmeriCorps programs, our partners, provides opportunities for Mississippians to address documented needs in our communities.

Upon successful completion of their service, full time AmeriCorps members earn the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $5,815 from the National Service Trust. Members have up to seven years to use the award to pay for higher education expenses or apply to qualified student loans. Members who serve in a less than full time capacity receive an education award based upon position enrolled in.

During the 2017-2018 program year, Volunteer Mississippi supported 10 AmeriCorps programs that engaged 535 individuals serving as AmeriCorps members throughout our state. Six of these programs focused on education, preparing Pre-K students to successfully transition to kindergarten, and tutoring and mentoring K-12 students throughout our state. Three of our programs focused on healthy futures, providing communities the opportunity to eat healthy and lead active and healthy lives. One program focused on environmental stewardship, refurbishing our Mississippi Gulf Coast lands. You can read about our 2017-2018 programs at http://www.volunteermississippi.ms.gov/americorps/americorps-state-programs.

All of these AmeriCorps members will complete their term of service on August 30, 2018, and we’re throwing them a Celebration of Service on June 4, 2018. We would like to invite you to help us help them prepare for their "Next Steps," their Life After AmeriCorps!
